What are affiliate links and why do you need them?

If you’re a blogger or online content creator, you’ve probably heard of “affiliate links”. These are those special little links that allow someone to earn a commission when a visitor clicks on said link and completes a purchase.

When you sign up for an affiliate program, you’re usually given a unique link that you can use on your website to promote your chosen products/services. When someone clicks on your link and makes a purchase, you’ll earn a commission on the sale.

These links are an important part of many bloggers’ and content creators’ income streams. They allow you to earn money by recommending products or services that you (hopefully) use and love. For example, if you’re a food blogger, you might include links to your favorite blender or spices you use in your recipes.

Do you need to explain affiliate links to your site visitors?

Yes. Why? Transparency. Content creators have a responsibility to be transparent with their followers about any potential conflicts of interest.

When you include them in your content, your end goal is to essentially get paid to promote products or services. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, it’s important to disclose that relationship to your readers. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it’s also required by law.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires bloggers and content creators to disclose any connections they have to companies, including affiliate relationships. This means you need to clearly explain to your site visitors that you may earn a commission if they make a purchase through one of your links.

So, HOW do you explain affiliate links to your site visitors?

There are a few different ways you can do it, but the key is to be short and sweet.

  1. Include a disclaimer at the beginning of your blog post (like I do) or content explaining that you may earn a commission on some of the products or services you recommend.
  2. Use language like “This post contains affiliate links. If you click on a link and make a purchase, I may earn a commission.”
  3. Place a disclosure statement near each affiliate link you include in your content.

Being transparent builds trust with readers and followers. By doing so, you’ll maintain the integrity of your content.
